The rainy season will soon be here in Tokyo. It usually lasts to mid July. We call this season “Tsuyu”. It literally means “plum rain”, because it coincides with the plum ripening season. Sounds very poetic, but actually it is very humid and damp.
Although “Tsuyu” is a gloomy time, there are some upsides to it. One of them is “Ajisai” (hydrangea) viewing. Hydrangeas change their color depending on the surrounding environment from faint color to blue, pink and deep blue,. Just like performing a magic trick. Their beauty is even accentuated in the rain. Enjoying hydrangeas decorated with raindrops is one attraction before summer heat kicks in.
